EU Plans AI Gigafactories to Boost Tech Sovereignty
The EU aims to close the AI infrastructure gap with its “European AI Continent” strategy, proposing up to €200 billion in funding—€20 billion of which would go toward building up to five AI gigafactories. Europe currently trails the U.S. in cloud capacity, with far fewer data centers. The plan includes public-private investment, improved access to European data spaces, and the development of competitive large language models. Final details are expected in the upcoming “Cloud and AI Development Act” later this year.
